A significant increase in cases manifesting both Gender Dysphoria (GD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been observed.
Historically this co-occurrence has not been the focus of attention for mental health professionals who would opt to specialize in the evaluation and treatment of one of these areas, but not in both. This situation has triggered the need for professionals from both fields to collaborate in the assessment and treatment of GD in the context of ASD, and vice versa. Aspects, including ethical considerations of this collaboration in the context of the assessment and treatment process will be discussed.

Dr. Strang will share from his rich experience working with autistic gender diverse youth. The presentation will include the most up-to-date research findings on the co-occurrence, life stories of autistic transgender individuals, assessment and treatment recommendations for providers, and stories of hope and resilience for families struggling to know how best to support their kids with the co-occurrence. The current care guidelines for autistic-gender diverse youth will be carefully reviewed, and the voices and experiences of individuals with the co-occurrence will be interwoven throughout. Common needs of neurodiverse gender minority individuals will be explored, including the challenges that arise from being a “double minority.” The talk will also highlight unique perspectives and strengths of those with the co-occurrence, celebrating the ways that these individuals give us fresh eyes for both the experience and expression of gender diversity.

What if God Is Transgender? |

Rev. Moonhawk River Stone

Rev. Moonhawk River Stone
|
As transgender people we can often have a difficult relationship with the organized religion in which we were raised--or a difficult time finding loving affirming religious community as adults. Some of us were not raised in an organized religion and are seeking something more than a religion to follow. This workshop is about moving beyond our wounds to what is next. What if we enlarged the discussion? What if we explored the differences between spirituality and religion in a very hands on practical manner? What if we drew together the best of what faith and spirituality have to offer us? What if we decided to create our own relationship to the Divine, our own understanding of God? What happens when we experience God in a much more personal, yet, Universal way? Interested the journey? Workshop will be a guided discussion introducing participants to a new, comforting, inspiring way to approach All That Is. It will give participants some suggested directions from which to explore spirituality as a path to affirming their LGBTQI identity, to finding peace, genuine connectedness while exploring kindness, compassion and, most especially, joy.

In this workshop I will present my personal narrative to highlight resilience. I will address alarming statistics in the trans community by humanizing our problems sharing my story and highlighting other stories. We will address suicide, mental health and ways to heal that are beyond the medical model. We will hear about barriers and how to brake them down. I will address bullying that is done by "good" people and is more subtle and how to deal with this in an intelligent rational manner.
This will be an interactive workshop in which role playing will be implemented to teach solutions. Some specific areas to address will be handling verbal aggression, threats, rumors and cyberbullying. I will address spirituality in broad terms, humor connections as antidotes to very real problems we face and how these alternative tactics are equally if not superior tactics than simply reacting, and how to get the authorities attention when it has crossed legal lines.
This workshop is appropriate for all people especially social workers, doctors, therapists and all allies in any form.

Volunteering for the Transgender Community through our changing landscape |

|
The transgender community has seen rapid change recently. 20 years ago (before the internet) it was challenging to even FIND or describe a Transgender community. Many of us were lucky enough to find those events and support groups that started well be fore the internet, and we owe tremendous gratitude to those brave transgender souls who lead the way.
Today, we have celebrities and spokes people, advocates and activists, social and support groups, doctors, conferences and an entire industry growing up around our very lives. Being transgender is a uniquely personal experience. Yet we all share common experiences and fears. Because of the rapid changes in our society and the cultural differences from coast to coast, the experiences of one generation of trans-people is significantly different that the experience of the next generation, and the one after that.
This workshop will help us as a group work together to identify how we want to "pay it forward," and provide authenticity, personal satisfaction and depth to our collective transgender experience. Volunteering is best when each volunteer finds the right position and that position feeds the volunteer's soul and benefits the greater good.

Dr. Ruben Hopwood, PhD
|
This is a discussion space for people who identify as gender diverse, transgender, non-binary, or as having transgender histories. Participants will not be asked to justify or defend their presence in the discussion.
How do you define spirituality for yourself? Does it have a place in your life? Is there any room for spirituality in your life as a transgender or gender diverse person? How do you experience and include spirituality in your life, if you do? Why have you distanced yourself from spirituality, if you have?
Discuss the role or presence of spirituality in your life as a gender diverse person. Share brief descriptions of your experiences and practices and how these help or hinder your self-expression, self-acceptance, and self-understanding related to your gender identity. There are no right or wrong experiences. This discussion will be moderated. There is no place for judgement about any other participant's experiences of, or expression of, spirituality in their own lives. In recognition that people identify with a wide variety of spiritual expressions, beliefs, and practices, this moderated discussion will seek to provide a space that is open to hearing about diverse practices and beliefs without privileging any single one. Participants are expected to speak only about their own personal experiences using first-person statements and to withhold statements about, comments on, or judgements about "all" people, other spiritualties or beliefs, or any other participant.

Before Transgender; Conceptualizing an Identity without a Name |
|
T.J. Gundling
|
Southborough |
T.J. Gundling
|
The term Transgender, in describing the “big tent” identity category, appeared in the early 1990s and rapidly entered popular and academic discourse on sex and gender. Consequently, trans individuals born and coming of age during this period had access to information and support to help them understand and act on their experience. On the contrary, those born before about 1975 had very little to help them conceptualize a deeply personal and potentially isolating experience during their youth. Although allusions to various forms of “gender bending” were occasionally encountered these often reinforced the message that such behavior was at best fringe, and at worst pathological.
This workshop presents excerpts from several early memoirs to demonstrate how some individuals reconciled their gendered experience despite a dearth of reliable resources. It then moves into a period of contemplation during which participants are asked to complete a short instrument to document their own experience of coming to terms with themselves as differently gendered persons. The workshop ends with voluntary sharing and discussion.

We all know “Trans” is hot right now. It has gone mainstream on the internet, television, in plays and movies. It seems everyone is cashing in on it. Who does it serve? Are the images accurate? Does the trans world come out looking any better? Should we applaud?
In this seminar: Trans on Screen. Are we coming out any better?, we will review ways the subject of transgender and crossdressing has been depicted in films since the 1950s to today. We’ll consider the comparable formulaic themes between a number of films and their influences in perception of transvestism and transsexuality. Bring your popcorn and enjoy the show.

Founded by Ms Shaena Castro & Mr. Sean Coleman 2 trans POC folks from NYC. "The love seat" creates space for much needed conversations, to promote the erasure of stigma & disphoria associated with trans bodies that may lead to risky behaviors and/or substance abuse. In this work shop we will be opening up with "what is sex positivity to me?" To get an understanding of what first comes to mind. This will open up the floor to briefly touch on program topics such as; let’s take it “higher”(sex & drugs), anything you can do, I can get paid for (sex work & social stigmas), I'm colorblind (PANSEXUALITY),
hand-some, 2 some, or 3 some (polyamory & me/us), oh! you think you know? You have no idea!!! (Relationships & boundaries) etc. Our mission for this group is to create conversations that would begin to normalize trans bodies and remove society stigmas that are associated with them. Bringing these topics and conversations to the forefront we hope to
• decrease harmful practices such as the pairing of chemical & alcohol use with sexual encounters
• Reduce Black Market surgeries as a result of body dysphoria and body shaming
• decrease risky anonymous hookups
We hope to increase safety measures such as,
• Pep and prep awareness and use
• Condom use & proper use
• raise Self-esteem
• raise Self worth
•info on local needle exchange programs.

No Longer Lost in The Shuffle: Being Disabled and Trans-- |

This facilitated group discussion is open to all, but is intended to be a space for people with disabilities to discuss a broad cross section of issues from how our identities as trans people intersect with our being disabled. How do we integrate those two into our well being, especially when interacting with various health care providers? We will explore what the concept of access means in broad political social justice terms and explore how the transgender civil rights/human rights movement has/has not made space for those who are disabled. We will explore what it means to be disabled in a world obsessed with denial of those who are disabled and how we, as disabled trans people, struggle to be confident, self-assured human beings in the face of these challenges.

Own it! Living the Real You |

One of the things we hear most during transitioning is about "passing". This sometimes can become an obsession and a limiting factor towards becoming ourselves. In this workshop we will look at the limiting factors for ourselves, our own observations of cis-gender people, and how we can shape and mold our own thoughts to empower ourselves. The idea of owning it, came from a group session in which I was participating. In response to one of the others who was so caught up in the labels and the limitations that it brings, I told them to stop living their lives as they believe others want, but take control of their life and OWN IT! We all have a beautiful spirit to share. We all have had so much to overcome. We should not allow our own thoughts to become our enemy.
